Gokceada (or Imroz, as the Greek called it) is the name for the turkish island of winds, located in the Aegean Sea, just below the Dardanelle strait. As the name says, here you can find the best winds in the region, the perfect place for kiteboarders and windsurfers.
But let’s see the facts first:
- the size of the island is of 30/15 km, and you can reach it with the ferry from Kaba Tepe (10 Euro per passing)
- in the SE part of the island there is a large bay with on shore winds, perfect for kiteboarders
- the Meltemi wind blows from the north with a speed of 20-24 knots in the morning, decreasing to 6-12 knots in the afternoon
The accommodation on the island is decent, the food is great (typical turkish food, you HAVE to try it), the general feeling is of a camp where you go just for kiteboarding and campfire on the beach. For a better connection with nature, you can also bring your tent – you will definitely not be the only one camping.
There are several kiteboarding schools that provide classes on the beach, but you should book one in advance. So if you are planning your 1st of May holiday, this could be the perfect adventure. After all, what else could you want? Kiteboarding all day party on the beach at night, a lot of cool people to meet – sounds like a great start for the summer.
